  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • The risk of a drug overdose is always greater when using illicit street drugs, because the user can never be sure how strong the drug is that they are taking; ultimately, this can lead to serious, or even fatal consequences.
  • Alcohol is an irritant to the stomach, and it is common for someone who drinks in excess to vomit putting the person in danger of choking on their own vomit. This can cause death by asphyxiation in a person who is not conscious because of intoxication.
  • About 9% of adults in the United States met the criteria for an alcohol use disorder; whereas 2% met the criteria for a drug use disorder and 1.1% met the criteria for both.
  • The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is currently examining the prescription histories of individuals who have died from prescription drug overdoses in hopes of identifying markers that are indicative of people at risk of fatal overdoses; this information can be used to enhance the effectiveness of prescription monitoring programs nationwide.
  • During 2010, the largest majority of drug overdose incidents were related to illicit or prescription drugs.

Other Language Programs

Those who speak other languages, other than English that is, should be able to receive drug or alcohol rehabilitation which is on par with English speakers. Speakers of other languages should not feel that their treatment opportunities are limited or inferior because they don't speak English. There are many substance abuse rehabilitation programs available which provide services to those who speak foreign languages, all of which provide a selection of programs to choose from. For example, some substance abuse treatment programs which cater to individuals who speak other languages are only short term programs, and others are longer term programs. Foreign language speakers can consult with a treatment professional in their area to choose a drug or alcohol treatment facility that provides rehabilitation services in their specific language.
