  • Dilaudid is known to cause nausea, vomiting, insensitivity to pain, contraction of the pupils, constipation, sweating, itchy skin, and slowed breathing.
  • A number of fatal fentanyl overdoses have been caused by time-release fentanyl patches which were prescribed to legitimate users for pain; a defect caused the patch to malfunction causing an excessive amount of the drug to leak and become absorbed by patients, resulting in life-threatening side effects and death in some cases.
  • At the start of a detoxification program, alcoholics are about twice as likely to have suffered a serious injury in the six months prior to detox as their counterparts who are detoxing for illicit drug use.
  • Although cocaine overdose is not common, it has been known to occur and can be fatal.
  • Drinking alcohol in excess accounts for 2.3 million years of potential life lost (YPLL) annually, or an average of about 30 years of potential life lost for each death.

Residential Short-Term Treatment that is 30 days or less

Residential short-term treatment for drug or alcohol addiction is a type ofrehabilitation program where the person will stay at the facility on an inpatient basis, and which normally demands a stay of 30 days or less. While attending residential short-term treatment the recovering addict undergoes an intensive but short duration of treatment that commonly includes a supervised detoxification, counseling, and other forms of therapy which are aimed at helping the person to recover and be able to function without drugs in daily life once rehab is complete. Residential short-term treatment is not always effective for all instances of addiction, and most will need an aftercare program or additional treatment in a more long-term residential setting.
