  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • During 2007, 137,000 persons aged 12 or older reported that they had used PCP in the past year.
  • The risk of a drug overdose is always greater when using illicit street drugs, because the user can never be sure how strong the drug is that they are taking; ultimately, this can lead to serious, or even fatal consequences.
  • Anabolic steroid users become addicted to these drugs and continue to take them in spite of physical problems and other negative effects on their social relations.
  • During the 1960s the rates of recreational use of LSD were extremely high because of the drugs "mind-expanding" qualities which were promoted by influential researchers, such as Harvard scientist Timothy Leary.
  • Both psychological and physical dependence can result from use of Ativan, making it difficult to discontinue use.

Co-Occurring Mental with Substance Abuse Issues

Persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders must address both issues in order to become fully rehabilitated. Some individuals take drugs or alcohol to relieve symptoms of mental health disorders, and some people take drugs which then, in turn, causes symptoms which mimic mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. Addiction rehabilitation professionals know how to distinguish between the two, and can work with clients to correctly treat real mental health conditions in tandem with any other substance abuse treatment that is done with the individual. This has proven to be effective in keeping people with mental health issues off of drugs and alcohol and mentally stable and healthy.
