  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • About 15 years ago, over three quarters of all heroin users injected the drug, although currently that number has shrunk to 65% as the number of individuals snorting heroin has grown.
  • Gay methamphetamine are less likely to use condoms, have more sex partners, and take part in sexual activity which puts them at an elevated risk for HIV infection, such as unprotected receptive anal sex.
  • Individuals struggling with alcohol problems may not be as likely to choose becoming married or having a child, and these milestones may not affect their drinking behavior to the same extent that they affect people with less problematic drinking practices.
  • Individual counseling as part of drug rehab not only focuses on reducing or stopping illicit drug or alcohol use but other areas which may need particular focus such as employment status, illegal activity, and family/social relations.
  • A survivor of a drug overdose is often guilt-ridden because of putting their loved ones through such a traumatic ordeal, and is often willing to seek drug treatment in order to avoid the possibility of another such occurrence in the future.

Hospital Inpatient Programs

Hospital inpatient drug or alcohol treatment is done in a hospital or similar setting and is supervised by doctors and other medical staff. Hospital inpatient treatment is sometimes necessary in the beginning stages of abstinence when the client may encounter the onset of life threatening withdrawal symptoms, which is sometimes true when quitting alcohol as well as a category of prescription drugs known as benzodiazepines which should be supervised very carefully by medical professionals in case of any complications. Hospital inpatient treatment is also delivered to those who desire a medication assisted withdrawal, as is the case with individuals who are addicted to opiates and wish to use this type of detox approach to avoid the harsh withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin or other opiate withdrawal. This type of opiate detox is not treatment in itself however, and these people will require additional counseling and therapy to fully recover from addiction.
