  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Amphetamine abuse often results in psychotic behavior including paranoia, violence and aggression.
  • Both psychological and physical dependence can result from use of Ativan, making it difficult to discontinue use.
  • GHB is often used to facilitate sexual assaults, due to the fact that it is tasteless and odorless and can be easily mixed with any type of liquid. This has earned it the name the "date rape drug."
  • In the United States, the highest rates of drug overdose deaths are reported to occur in the rural Appalachian states, the Southwestern states, and New England.
  • Children of alcoholics tend to be raised by parents with poorer cognitive abilities and in an environment which lacks stimulation, which may account in part for the pattern of failure found in children of alcoholics.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide variety of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment methods. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be performed on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically receive treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the individual to reside in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly helpful in handling more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on unique circumstances which can be different for each person. Most substance abuse treatment will focus on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then focus on underlying psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.
