  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • An observer of a drug overdose should attempt to maintain a state of calm, and try to get a response from the person by lightly pinching the back of their arm or by calling their name; additionally, if breathing or a pulse rate is not detectable, emergency resuscitation should begin immediately.
  • Individuals can become physically and psychologically dependent to crack without realizing it, sometimes even after just one use.
  • Individuals who start drinking alcohol before the age of 15 are twice as likely to develop an abuse problem and four times as likely to develop alcoholism, versus those who wait to drink when they are 21.
  • Many senior citizens who take medications for chronic pain will forget that they have already taken the potent pain medicines; in many of these instances, these elderly individuals will experience a potentially deadly drug overdose as a direct result of their memory lag.
  • As the number of people in the United States seeking treatment for chronic pain increases, so will the rate of accidental opioid-related drug overdose cases.

Criminal Justice Client Programs

Criminal justice clients often need substance abuse treatment because of their problems with drug and alcohol abuse. Due to the nature of the criminal justice system, there are specific steps and guidelines that must be adhered to in order to be accepted into a criminal justice substance abuse rehabilitation program or recovery program. The initial step is to establish the criminal justice clients eligibility. This step is accomplished by a panel of officials who decide how much and what type of drug or alcohol is necessary. Sometimes, the criminal justice clients receive their substance abuse rehabilitation while they are incarcerated. For optimum results, they are encouraged, if not strictly directed, to continue their recovery process once they leave jail and enroll in a sober living home or a long-term residential transitional living program.
