  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • After someone stops drinking, alcohol in the stomach and intestine continues to circulate throughout the bloodstream and body.
  • Because of its prolonged extended action, abuse of OxyContin can cause serious side effects when injected as it goes directly into the bloodstream.
  • Many drug overdose deaths in the United States have been caused by tranquilizers and by antidepressants; some researchers estimate approximately one-quarter of the total amount of drug overdoses are related to these types of prescription drugs.
  • According to an epidemiologist for the Center for Disease Control, drug overdose death rates are currently more than double what they were during the peak years of crack cocaine mortality in the 1990's, and five times higher than the rates during the year of heroin mortality peak in 1975.
  • How alcohol ultimately effects someone can vary from person to person, depending on whether or not they have eaten, how thirsty they are and even the time of day it is.

Native American or Alaska Native Languages

Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much higher rates of substance abuse and addiction than other ethnicities, a situation which must be addressed for these cultures to survive. In fact, Native American and Alaska youth have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the country. While the reasons may vary from person to person, most of the reasons for the high rates of substance abuse among Native American and Alaska natives are cultural ones. The most obvious obstacles to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for substance abuse and addiction are culture differences and language. This is why it is important that Native Americans and Alaska Natives receive substance abuse treatment in a drug rehab program that is culturally acceptable, but most importantly in one that can provide treatment and therapy in the Native American or Alaska Native languages.
