  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • The most common substances that are reported in drug overdose deaths are heroin, cocaine, prescription drugs and alcohol.
  • During a cocaine binge the drug is taken repeatedly for many hours or even days and users often experience increasing restlessness, irritability and paranoia and even paranoid psychosis in some cases with auditory hallucinations and a disconnection with reality.
  • A heroin overdose as a result of snorting, smoking, or injecting the drug, can cause slow and shallow breathing, convulsions, coma, and even death.
  • New powerful prescription pain medications such as Fentanlyl are reported to be up to a hundred times more powerful than morphine; such drugs have recently been reported to cause more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.
  • High school and college students in the U.S. use prescription stimulants recreationally and combine them with alcohol or other drugs for an euphoric effect.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug rehab services which are delivered on an outpatient basis are readily available to addicted people who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to participate in an inpatient treatment center. An outpatient substance abuse treatment center offers many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug or alcohol rehabilitation program where the individual is expected to remain at the rehab facility until treatment is complete. Outpatient drug rehab is also offered for individuals who have already gone through residential or inpatient treatment but also need a thorough aftercare and relapse prevention program which will provide further support and treatment to help them avoid relapse.
