  • During 2000, Ecstasy use increased among students in the 12th, 10th, and 8th grades.
  • A survivor of a drug overdose is often consumed with guilt over putting their loved ones through this traumatic ordeal, and is often willing to seek drug treatment to avoid the possibility of another such occurrence in the future.
  • As the morphine withdrawal progresses users may experience elevated blood pressure, chills with goose bumps alternating with hot flashes, kicking movements of the legs and excessive sweating, severe pains in the bones and muscles and muscle spasms.
  • Fevers associated with drug withdrawal should be monitored closely to ensure that this is not the result of an underlying infection, which should be treated immediately.
  • Heroin users who become tolerant to the drug often cease experiencing most of the feelings of reward and pleasure they first felt and yet have to continue use just to feel normal and avoid withdrawal.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment takes place in a wide range of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment methods. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be performed on an outpatient basis, where the individual will typically attend treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the individual to reside in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly helpful in handling more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on different circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will focus on getting the person physically rehabilitated, and then focus on underlying psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.
