  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Individuals who abuse OxyContin will frequently remove the sustained-release coating to get a rapid release of the drug, causing a rush of euphoria similar to heroin.
  • Researchers have reported that in order for a person to consume enough marijuana to experience a fatal overdose, they would have to consume almost 40,000 times the amount of THC (the active ingredient in marijuana) required to intoxicate them. For example, if it took an individual 10 hits to become intoxicated, it would take 400,000 hits of marijuana to produce a fatal overdose.
  • Individuals who are coerced to stay in drug rehab as a matter of legality tend to stay in treatment longer and do as well as or better than those not under legal pressure.
  • Drug withdrawal from certain drugs such as benzodiazepines or alcohol can cause life threatening symptoms, and therefore the abrupt discontinuation of any type of drug without medical or professional detox supervision is not recommended.
  • Hashish users may experience reduced short-term memory and difficulties with thinking and learning.

Residential Short-Term Treatment that is 30 days or less

Residential short-term treatment for addiction is a variety ofrehabilitation program where the person will stay at the facility on an inpatient basis, and which typically requires a stay of 30 days or less. While in residential short-term treatment the client undergoes an intensive but brief course of treatment that typically incorporates a supervised detox, counseling, and other forms of therapy which are aimed at helping the person become rehabilitated and able to function without drugs in everyday life once treatment is complete. Residential short-term treatment is not always effective for all instances of addiction, and most will require an aftercare program or further treatment in a more long-term residential setting.
