  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • It is important for an observer of a drug overdose to question the patient about what drugs they have taken, as by the time they reach the hospital, they may have be unconscious, and therefore may be unable to communicate.
  • Chronic methamphetamine users often experience mental depression associated with withdrawal that lasts longer than the short-term symptoms and is more severe than that of cocaine withdrawal.
  • The misuse of prescription medications is most commonly reported to be unintentional; accidental overdoses generally result from the particular drug being overly prescribed or due to the unwitting ingestion by young children.
  • Ativan should never be discontinued abruptly, as doing so can result in severe withdrawal symptoms which may be untreatable and even deadly.
  • About 2 percent of American high school seniors have used heroin at least once in their lifetime, and nearly half of those injected the drug.

Adolescents (18 and under)

It is an unfortunate fact that many adolescents in the United States become introduced to drugs and alcohol at a very young age, and some even become addicted and dependent to drugs and/or alcohol. For adolescents who do become addicted and dependent to alcohol and drugs, parents must be willing to do whatever it takes to get the problem resolved before it is too late. Any sign that drugs or alcohol are in the picture should be confronted immediately, otherwise, addiction will lead down a path of total destruction for the adolescent as well as for the family. There are drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities for adolescents available in every state, many of which cater only to adolescents and have treatment professionals and counselors on hand that are trained specifically in handling this age range.
