  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • A number of fatal fentanyl overdoses have been caused by time-release fentanyl patches which were prescribed to legitimate users for pain; a defect caused the patch to malfunction causing an excessive amount of the drug to leak and become absorbed by patients, resulting in life-threatening side effects and death in some cases.
  • Between 2009 and 2010, lifetime use of Ecstasy by 8th graders increased from 2.2% to 3.3%, past year use from 1.3% to 2.4%, and current use 0.6% to 1.1%. This increase in use follows declines in perceived risk associated with the drug reported over the past several years.
  • Current studies conducted by the UCLA School of Public Health have recently concluded that the liberalized prescription of pain medications in the U.S. is the direct cause of the epidemic that this country is currently facing.
  • In a recent Canadian study, violence was the leading cause of amphetamine-related deaths.
  • Ecstasy does not cause true hallucinations such as LSD, but many users report distorted time and perception while under the influence of this drug.

Criminal Justice Client Programs

Criminal justice clients frequently need drug treatment because of their problems with drug or alcohol addiction. Due to the nature of the criminal justice system, there are distinct steps and guidelines that must be completed in order to be accepted into a criminal justice drug treatment facility or recovery program. The initial step is to determine the criminal justice clients eligibility. This step is completed by a panel of officials who determine how much and what type of substance abuse [[[rehabilitation is necessary. Often, the criminal justice clients receive their drug rehabilitation while they are incarcerated. For the best possible results, they are encouraged, if not strictly directed, to continue their recovery once they leave jail and enroll in sober living or a long-term residential transitional living program.
