  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • About 25% of past-year illicit drug initiates in 2010 said their first drug was some form of psychotherapeutic (26.2 percent, including 17.3 percent with pain relievers, 4.6 percent with tranquilizers, 2.5 percent with stimulants, and 1.9 percent with sedatives).
  • Abrupt cessation of Xanax only makes the original symptoms of anxiety and panic that the drug was originally prescribed for more apparent, which is commonly referred to a "rebound effect" and is one of the reasons the drug is so addictive.
  • Healthcare costs, traffic accidents, criminal justice system expenses and crimes committed by individuals who use opiates illicitly all contribute to the escalating costs that Americans spend as a result of opiate use each year.
  • Amphetamines are psycho stimulant drugs which stimulate the central nervous system; when overused can be psychologically and physically addictive.
  • Extended use of Xanax can lead to physical drug dependence, even when it is taken at the prescribed doses.

Adolescents (18 and under)

It is an unfortunate fact that many adolescents in the United States become introduced to drugs and alcohol at a very young age, and some even become addicted and dependent to drugs and/or alcohol. For adolescents who do become addicted and dependent to alcohol and drugs, parents must take every step possible to get the problem resolved before it is too late. Any suspicion that drugs or alcohol are in the picture should be addressed immediately, otherwise, addiction will lead down a path of total destruction for the adolescent as well as for the family. There are drug treatment facilities for adolescents available in every state, many of which cater only to adolescents and have treatment professionals and counselors on staff that are trained specifically in handling this age range.
