  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Heroin exerts its effects on the brain more quickly than other opiates, which is probably why many opiate addicts prefer heroin.
  • Hashish users can experience an increased pulse and heart rate, bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils, and often increased appetite.
  • Nausea can be an extremely dangerous drug overdose symptom, because many people have died from breathing vomit into their lungs (aspirate).
  • The skyrocketing rate of drug overdoses in the United States is not surprising, as opioid analgesics are increasingly being prescribed to individuals; according to a recent government survey, one in five adults and one in ten kids have received some form of opiate pain prescription within the past year.
  • Drugs that are commonly classified as depressants include opiates, alcohol, and benzodiazepines; a depressant overdose is most often characterized by slow or shallow breathing, blue lips, cold or clammy skin, slow or faint pulse, snoring or gurgling noises and unresponsiveness.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide variety of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment methods. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be done on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically participate in treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the individual to reside in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly beneficial in resolving more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on various circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then concentrate on underlying psychological and emotional issues.
