  • Crack is a form of cocaine that has not been neutralized by an acid to make cocaine hydrochloride, the pure form of the drug.
  • Detoxification is the first step of drug rehab, and is the process by which the body clears itself of drug residuals.
  • Heroin users who become tolerant to the drug often cease experiencing most of the feelings of reward and pleasure they first felt and yet have to continue use just to feel normal and avoid withdrawal.
  • Some drug overdose deaths that are linked to heroin are actually caused by the adverse reaction to adulterants that are commonly used to cut the drug.

Hospital Inpatient Programs

Hospital inpatient drug treatment is done in a hospital setting and is supervised by doctors and other medical staff. Hospital inpatient treatment is sometimes necessary in the beginning stages of abstinence when the person may experience the onset of life threatening withdrawal symptoms, which is sometimes the case when quitting alcohol as well as a category of prescription drugs known as benzodiazepines which must be monitored very carefully by medical professionals in case of any complications. Hospital inpatient treatment is also delivered to those who choose to undergo medication assisted withdrawal, as is the case with individuals who are addicted to opiates and wish to use this type of detoxification approach to avoid the severe withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin or other opiate withdrawal. This type of opiate detox is not considered full rehabilitation and these people will require additional counseling and therapy to completely recover from addiction.
