  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • GHB is sometimes sold illicitly as supplements for bodybuilding, fat loss, reversal of baldness, improved eyesight, and to combat aging, drug addiction, and insomnia.
  • In 2010, the age group accounting for the highest rate of driving under the influence of illicit drugs during the past year was young adults aged 18 to 25 (12.7 percent).
  • Because the sale of GHB is illegal, no controls are in place regarding strength and purity of the drug when it is produced.
  • The use of two or more substances, which is commonly referred to as polydrug use, is contributing substantially to the skyrocketing rates of drug overdoses that are currently being reported throughout the United States.
  • Factors such as lower income and marital rates, high jobless rates and having marijuana-using acquaintances during adolescence and early adulthood are commonly reported among recreational marijuana users.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment takes place in a wide variety of distinct treatment settings with a variety of different treatment methods. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be carried out on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically attend treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly helpful in resolving more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on unique circumstances which can be different for each person. Most substance abuse treatment will focus on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then focus on the root psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.
