  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Up to 10,000 patients a year are being treated in Victorian hospitals for drug overdoses, new statistics show. And most have overdosed on prescription or legal drugs, including tranquillisers, anti-depressants and analgesics.
  • Because opiates can be abused to get high they are now some of the most commonly abused drugs in the world.
  • Female Opana users sometimes report an interruption in their menstrual cycles.
  • Whether a drug overdose is entirely accidental or due to negligence or abuse, there is always a great amount of mending to be done before a person can pick up their lives in the wake of such a tragic incident.
  • Compared to non-users, students who use prescription drugs non-medically are more likely to meet criteria for dependence on alcohol and marijuana, skip class more frequently, and spend less time studying.

Co-Occurring Mental with Substance Abuse Issues

Persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders must handle both issues in order to become fully rehabilitated. Some individuals take drugs or alcohol to relieve symptoms of mental health complications, and some individuals take drugs which then, in turn, causes symptoms which mimic mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. Addiction treatment professionals know how to distinguish between the two, and can work with clients to properly treat real mental health problems in tandem with any other substance abuse treatment that is done with the individual. This has proven to be effective in keeping individuals with mental health problems off of drugs and alcohol and mentally stable and happy.
