  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Methadone overdoses have skyrocket in the United States, because the drug is much cheaper and some insurance plans do not cover the more expensive prescription pain medications.
  • As of 2008, an estimated 2.2 million Americans used marijuana for the first time; over half were under age 18.
  • After the beginning of alcohol withdrawal, symptoms may worsen within 48-72 hours and can even continue to plague the individual for weeks.
  • A 2009 survey found that over 70% of Americans who abused prescription pain relievers got them from friends or relatives.
  • One of the problems with cases of serious alcohol poisoning is that the symptoms of this type of overdose are commonly the same as those of non-fatal intoxication.

Co-Occurring Mental with Substance Abuse Issues

Persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders must address both issues if there is any hope for them to recover completely. Some individuals take drugs or alcohol to relieve symptoms of mental health problems, and some people take drugs which then, in turn, brings about symptoms which are identical to mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. Addiction treatment professionals know how to distinguish between the two, and can work with clients to appropriately treat real mental health conditions in tandem with any other substance abuse treatment that is done with the person. This has proven to be effective in keeping individuals with mental health disorders off of drugs and mentally stable and healthy.
