  • In many instances, emergency medical personnel can determine the type of drug that has been used by observing the various symptoms that have been exhibited by the patient.
  • Overdose deaths can be intentional or unintentional, and they can result from both licit and illicit drug abuse. Drugs commonly implicated in overdose deaths are alcohol, psychoactive medications, analgesics, illicit drugs such as cocaine and heroin, and multiple drugs taken concomitantly.
  • Drug overdose deaths in the United States have historically been linked to urban areas; according to recent government statistics, the rate of drug overdose deaths in rural areas throughout the U.S. has increased dramatically.
  • Cocaine is a powerfully addictive central nervous system stimulant which can be snorted, injected, or smoked.
  • Excuses for using methamphetamine vary from person to person, although most users cite having used the drug for increased energy and productivity, its low cost, self-medication for depression or attention deficits, and the euphoric high.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug or alcohol rehabilitation services which are delivered on an outpatient basis are available to addicted individuals who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to participate in an inpatient rehabilitation facility. An outpatient drug treatment program offers many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug or alcohol treatment facility where the individual is expected to stay and reside at the treatment facility until treatment has been fully completed. Outpatient drug rehabilitation is also offered for those who have already gone through residential or inpatient treatment but require a thorough aftercare and relapse prevention program which will provide further support and treatment to help them remain clean and sober.
