  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Ecstasy users often feel as though they are floating, which can interfere with motor coordination and result in falls and injury.
  • Almost 34% of 8th graders surveyed in 2008 reported that trying inhalants once or twice was a "great risk".
  • Drinking alcohol in excess over time can result in cardiovascular problems, including myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation and hypertension.
  • Fevers associated with drug withdrawal should be monitored closely to ensure that this is not the result of an underlying infection, which should be treated immediately.
  • Treatment for a drug overdose is always dependent on knowing which type of drug has been used; therefore, it is critical that a person who witnesses a drug overdose bring any pills or bottles that may help the emergency medical team to determine the appropriate form of treatment.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide variety of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment methods. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be performed on an outpatient basis, where the individual will typically participate in treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the individual to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly beneficial in handling more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on unique circumstances which can be different for each person. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the person physically rehabilitated, and then concentrate on the root psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.
