  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • In 2004, nearly 12 Americans aged 12 or older had used methamphetamine at least once in their lifetime, 1.4 million of which had done so during the past year and 600,000 of which has done so during the past month.
  • Heroin overdose rates have grown by double-digits during the last five years, throughout the United States.
  • Higher rates of marijuana use among high school aged youth in the U.S. can be attributed in part to the perceptions that American adolescents have regarding the risks associated with marijuana use.
  • In certain people, an interaction that could result in a potentially fatal overdose can take place when alcohol is mixed with cough medicines that contain dextromethorphan; unfortunately, there is no possible way to predict who will experience this particular, life-threatening interaction, and who will not.
  • During 2010, the average age of first time non-medical use of prescription drugs among individuals aged 12 to 49 was 22.3 years.

Residential Short-Term Treatment that is 30 days or less

Residential short-term treatment for drug or alcohol addiction is a type ofrehabilitation program where the person will reside at the facility on an inpatient basis, and which usually requires a stay of 30 days or less. While attending residential short-term treatment the recovering addict undergoes an intensive but brief course of treatment that typically includes a supervised detoxification, counseling, and other forms of therapy which are aimed at helping the person to recover and be able to function without drugs in daily life once treatment is complete. Residential short-term treatment is not always effective for all cases of addiction, and most will require an aftercare program or further treatment in a more long-term residential setting.
