  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • A serious drug overdose can cause the failure of major organs such as the kidneys or the liver, or failure of entire systems, such as the respiratory or circulatory systems.
  • According to a current study by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, codeine, Demerol, and morphine were the prescription drugs that have accounted for the majority of overdose deaths in the U.S. over the past five years.
  • Individuals in the U.S. aged 50 and older are more prone to primarily abuse prescription pain relievers, rather than alcohol or other drugs.
  • Alcohol withdrawal which is considered severe can produce delirium tremens (DTs) which produces profound confusion, hallucinations, and severe autonomic nervous system over-activity.
  • Crack cocaine does not produce the same intensity of withdrawal symptoms seen in heroin withdrawal, but it is extremely addictive and users who cease using the drug may experience severe drug craving, depression, and lethargy.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide variety of distinct treatment settings with a variety of different treatment methods. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be carried out on an outpatient basis, where the individual will typically attend treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the individual to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly beneficial in resolving more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on unique circumstances which can be different for each person. Most substance abuse treatment will focus on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then focus on the root psychological and emotional issues.
