  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Alcohol is the third largest risk factor for disease burden worldwide, and is the leading risk factor in the Western Pacific and the Americas and the second largest in Europe.
  • In 2004, nearly 12 Americans aged 12 or older had used methamphetamine at least once in their lifetime, 1.4 million of which had done so during the past year and 600,000 of which has done so during the past month.
  • Currently in the United States, there is very little funding for overdose prevention; unfortunately, the overdose epidemic continues to escalate as the federal grants for these types of preventative programs are not being approved for funding.
  • In several states deaths as a result of prescription drugs now exceed those from motor vehicle accidents, with opiate painkillers like Vicodin, Percocet and OxyContin being the main culprits.
  • Hispanics and Blacks are less likely to have health insurance coverage, and are more likely to be below the poverty level than Whites which may decrease their access to alcohol addiction treatment.

Other Language Programs

Those who speak other languages, other than English that is, should receive substance abuse treatment which is on par with English speakers. Those who speak other languages should not feel that their treatment curriculum or treatment setting is going to be any less effective because they don't speak English. There are many substance abuse rehabilitation centers available which provide services to those who speak foreign languages, all of which provide various programs to choose from. For example, some drug rehab programs which can treat those who speak other languages are only short term rehab facilities, but there are more long term options available. Foreign language speakers can consult with an addiction professional in their area to choose a drug rehab program that provides rehabilitation services in their specific language.
