  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Treatment for a drug overdose is always dependent on knowing which type of drug has been used; therefore, it is critical that a person who witnesses a drug overdose bring any pills or bottles that may help the emergency medical team to determine the appropriate form of treatment.
  • A heroin overdose can be potentially deadly, if an observer does not realize that the symptoms of overdose are far more intense and serious than the actual immediate effects of the drug.
  • In 2008 about 4 million Americans aged 12 or older reported trying heroin at least once during their lifetimes.
  • In cases of a drug overdose that has been determined to be a suicide attempt, a psychiatric assessment will often be required by the hospital before the patient is released.
  • About one-half to two-thirds of boating accidents happen as a result of alcohol intoxication.

Hospital Inpatient Programs

Hospital inpatient drug rehabilitation is performed in a hospital setting and is supervised by doctors and other medical staff. Hospital inpatient treatment is sometimes necessary in the beginning stages of abstinence when the person may experience the onset of life threatening withdrawal symptoms, which is sometimes the case when quitting alcohol as well as a category of prescription drugs known as benzodiazepines which should be supervised very carefully by medical professionals in case of any complications. Hospital inpatient treatment is also delivered to individuals who choose to undergo medication assisted withdrawal, as is the case with opiate addicted individuals who wish to use this type of detoxification approach to manage the severe withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin or other opiate withdrawal. This type of opiate detox is not considered full rehabilitation and these individuals will need additional counseling and therapy to completely recover from addiction.
