  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Alcohol which cannot be processed by the liver goes into the blood where any additional alcohol makes its way to body tissues and blood stream, until the liver can process the excess alcohol.
  • Early onset of morphine withdrawal can result in: watery eyes, insomnia, diarrhea, runny nose, yawning, dysphoria, restlessness, loss of appetite, body aches, severe abdominal pain, nausea tremors, and an intense craving for morphine or other opiates.
  • According to recent studies, alcohol consumption among youth and young adults increases the risk of both fatal and nonfatal injuries.
  • Acetaminophen is metabolized solely by the liver, so there is a risk of fatal overdose due to hepatotoxicity when someone takes too much Vicodin.
  • Methadone overdoses have skyrocket in the United States, because the drug is much cheaper and some insurance plans do not cover the more expensive prescription pain medications.

Hospital Inpatient Programs

Hospital inpatient substance abuse treatment is done in a hospital or similar setting and is supervised by doctors and other medical staff. Hospital inpatient treatment is sometimes necessary in the beginning stages of abstinence when the client may experience the onset of life threatening withdrawal symptoms, which is sometimes the case when quitting alcohol as well as a category of prescription drugs known as benzodiazepines which should be supervised very carefully by medical professionals in case of any complications. Hospital inpatient treatment is also administered to individuals who choose to undergo medication assisted withdrawal, as is the case with opiate addicted individuals who wish to use this type of detox approach to manage the severe withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin or other opiate withdrawal. This type of opiate detoxification is not treatment in itself however, and these individuals will require further counseling and therapy to entirely recover from addiction.
