  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Chronic heroin use often prompts behavior that is self-destructive and irresponsible, antisocial, and indifferent to the injury, pain, or loss it causes others.
  • Common substances added to cocaine are sugars, such as mannitol, lactose, or glucose, or even sugar substitutes, and local anesthetics such as tetracaine, procaine, and lidocaine. Quinine, talc, and cornstarch are also sometimes used.
  • Sometimes drug overdoses are the result of a suicide attempt, but many times, drug overdoses are accidental.
  • According to a current government study that covered a 5-year period, the increasing number of opiate-related unintentional drug overdose deaths can be attributed to individuals who hop from doctor to doctor in order to get multiple prescriptions.
  • For every $1 invested in drug rehab in the U.S., there is a return of between $4 and $7 in reduced drug-related crime, criminal justice costs, and theft. When savings related to health care costs are included, total savings can exceed costs by a ratio of 12 to 1.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug rehabilitation programs which are delivered on an outpatient basis are available to addicted people who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to take part in an inpatient treatment center. An outpatient drug and alcohol rehab facility offers many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug or alcohol rehab facility where the person is required to remain at the rehab facility until the treatment process has been fully completed. Outpatient drug or alcohol rehab is also offered for those who have completed residential or inpatient treatment but also need a thorough aftercare program which will provide additional support and treatment to help them avoid relapse.
