  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • A number of fatal fentanyl overdoses have been caused by time-release fentanyl patches which were prescribed to legitimate users for pain; a defect caused the patch to malfunction causing an excessive amount of the drug to leak and become absorbed by patients, resulting in life-threatening side effects and death in some cases.
  • Hashish users commonly have the same respiratory problems as cigarette smokers.
  • Heroin users who snort or smoke the drug often graduate to injection because their bodies become conditioned to the drug and the effects become less intense.
  • Individuals with HIV tend to consume alcohol heavily well into their middle and older years, which can leave their organs at even more risk for injury.
  • Alcohol is the first fuel to be metabolized when combined with carbohydrates, fats and proteins, which postpones the fat-burning process and results in greater fat storage.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide range of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be performed on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically participate in treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly beneficial in resolving more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on unique circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then concentrate on underlying psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.
