  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Hashish users sometimes use the drug as a form of self-medication, particularly for social anxiety.
  • Illicit drug use among Americans in the military increased from 5 percent to 12 percent among active duty service members between 2005 and 2008, primarily due to prescription drug abuse.
  • The American Medical Association has currently reported that approximately 75% of all drug-related overdoses in the United States have involved the abuse of prescription drugs.
  • While a large percentage of people who have had a drug overdose have been reported to recover without experiencing any long term health effects, many of these cases have resulted in death.
  • Dilaudid addicted individuals who only go through medically assisted detox and withdrawal and get no further treatment have outcomes that are about the same as those who never attended a drug rehab.

Hospital Inpatient Programs

Hospital inpatient drug or alcohol treatment is performed in a hospital or similar setting and is overseen by doctors and other medical staff. Hospital inpatient treatment is often necessary in the beginning stages of abstinence when the client may encounter the onset of medically dangerous withdrawal symptoms, which is sometimes the case when quitting alcohol as well as a category of prescription drugs known as benzodiazepines which must be monitored very carefully by medical professionals in case of any complications. Hospital inpatient treatment is also administered to individuals who choose to undergo medication assisted withdrawal, as is the case with opiate addicted individuals who wish to use this type of detoxification approach to avoid the severe withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin or other opiate withdrawal. This type of opiate detoxification is not treatment in itself however, and these individuals will need additional counseling and therapy to completely recover from addiction.
