  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Amphetamines were the primary factor for 5% of the 1.6 million treatment admissions to publicly funded substance abuse treatment facilities in 1999, an increase from approximately 2 percent in 1993.
  • Amphetamine withdrawal may result in anxiety, agitation, excessive sleep, vivid or lucid dreams, deep REM sleep and suicidal ideation.
  • A gastric lavage is a common treatment that is utilized in cases of a drug overdose. During this treatment process, the stomach is washed out in order to be able to remove any traces of the drug so that it cannot be absorbed into the system.
  • Chronic abuse of alcohol can reduce the amount of digestive enzymes secreted by the pancreas which can cause inflammation and leaking digestive enzymes, which subsequently may attack the pancreas itself.
  • Because there are at least a quarter million people receiving methadone, it is unknown how many of these individuals may be addicted to the drug.

Limited Hospitalization/Day Treatment Programs

Partial Hospitalization, also known as "PHP" or Day Treatment, is a type of treatment program which works to treat substance abuse problems and mental health issues which may be co-occurring. In a PHP program, the person in treatment takes part in various recovery activities and techniques during the day and then returns home in the evening. This is done anywhere from five to seven days a week, depending on the seriousness of the problem. Partial Hospitalization can be beneficial for addicted individuals who may not be able to afford long-term inpatient care, or who are unable to be away from their families for prolonged periods of time. While in Day Treatment, individuals participate in typical counseling and therapy for addiction issues while also addressing mental health issues which could prevent them from making progress and obtaining gains throughout the treatment process.
