  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Heavy alcohol consumption (more than six drinks per day) can cause heart disease in people infected with HIV. Therefore, stopping or cutting down on their alcohol consumption may help to reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • During 2010, the number of first time non-medical users of prescription sedatives in the U.S. was 252,000.
  • Ecstasy users often take the drug despite experiencing unpleasant physical side effects and other social, behavioral, and health consequences.
  • Methadone overdoses have skyrocket in the United States, because the drug is much cheaper and some insurance plans do not cover the more expensive prescription pain medications.
  • Ecstasy is made using chemicals and other ingredients like caffeine, dextromethorphan (found in some cough syrups), amphetamines, PCP, and cocaine.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide range of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment methods. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be done on an outpatient basis, where the individual will typically participate in treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the individual to reside in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is especially helpful in handling more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on unique circumstances which can be different for each person. Most substance abuse treatment will focus on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then focus on the root psychological and emotional issues.
