  • High doses of GHB can make an individual fall into a deep coma-like sleep, and upon awakening they will have little or no memory of anything prior to taking the substance.
  • Successfully treating a drug overdose can be significantly harder if the individual refuses to divulge what type of drugs have been taken. In many instances, trained medical personnel can determine the type of drug that has been used by observing the various symptoms that are exhibited by the patient.
  • Cocaine typically causes the user to feel euphoric and energetic.
  • Individuals who abuse anabolic steroids take many times the recommended dose in order to be able to bulk up their muscle tone.
  • Up to 10,000 patients a year are being treated in Victorian hospitals for drug overdoses, new statistics show. And most have overdosed on prescription or legal drugs, including tranquillisers, anti-depressants and analgesics.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment takes place in a wide range of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be carried out on an outpatient basis, where the individual will typically receive treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to reside in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly helpful in handling more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on unique circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will focus on getting the person physically rehabilitated, and then focus on underlying psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.
