  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the drug overdose mortality trend in the United States closely correlates with the rapid rise in sales of opioid analgesics per capita.
  • As of 2009 in the U.S., men were more likely than women to seek detox services as part of an emergency room visit (62.9 and 37.1 visits per 100,000 population, respectively).
  • Individuals who survive a drug overdose may often need long term health care; this medical care may include kidney dialysis, a kidney or liver transplant, or treatment for heart failure, stroke, or coma.
  • Alcohol is an irritant to the stomach, and it is common for someone who drinks in excess to vomit putting the person in danger of choking on their own vomit. This can cause death by asphyxiation in a person who is not conscious because of intoxication.
  • Amphetamine sometimes contain substances which do not easily dissolve in water, and when injected can pass into the body and block small blood vessels or weaken the blood vessel walls. Kidney damage, lung problems, strokes, or other tissue injury may result.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug rehabilitation services which are provided on an outpatient basis are available to addicted individuals who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to participate in an inpatient treatment program. An outpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation program delivers many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug or alcohol rehabilitation center where the person is required to remain at the rehabilitation facility until treatment has been fully completed. Outpatient drug rehabilitation is also offered for individuals who have already gone through residential or inpatient treatment but require a thorough aftercare and relapse prevention program which will offer additional support and therapy to help them avoid relapse.
