  • During 2004, around 6.0 million Americans reported having used prescription drugs non-medically in past 30 days.
  • Fevers associated with drug withdrawal should be monitored closely to ensure that this is not the result of an underlying infection, which should be treated immediately.
  • Dilaudid is often legitimately prescribed to individuals with moderate to severe pain such as severe burns, cancer, heart attack, soft tissue and bone injuries, renal colic, and many other conditions that are known to be extremely painful.
  • Even individuals who take fentanyl legitimately for pain are putting themselves at risk of dangerous side effects and overdose.
  • Due to the rapid onset of central nervous system depression that commonly occurs as the result of a methadone overdose, it is not wise to encourage the person to vomit, as this could lead to them choking.

Hospital Inpatient Programs

Hospital inpatient drug or alcohol rehabilitation is carried out in a hospital setting and is supervised by doctors and other medical staff. Hospital inpatient treatment is often necessary in the beginning stages of abstinence when the client may encounter the onset of medically dangerous withdrawal symptoms, which is sometimes the case when quitting alcohol as well as a category of prescription drugs known as benzodiazepines which must be supervised very carefully by medical professionals in case of any complications. Hospital inpatient treatment is also administered to individuals who choose to undergo medication assisted withdrawal, as is the case with individuals who are addicted to opiates and wish to use this type of detoxification technique to avoid the severe withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin or other opiate withdrawal. This type of opiate detoxification is not treatment in itself however, and these individuals will require additional counseling and therapy to fully recover from addiction.
