  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • As of 2005, the most significant predictors of whether an individual would complete drug rehab or transfer to another program to receive further treatment included: alcohol as the primary substance of abuse, less than daily use at admission, being over age 40, having 12 or more years of education, being White, referral to treatment by the criminal justice system, and being employed.
  • Inhalant abuse can result in short-term effects that physically slow down normal body functions.
  • Children of alcoholics tend to be raised by parents with poorer cognitive abilities and in an environment which lacks stimulation, which may account in part for the pattern of failure found in children of alcoholics.
  • Drunkenness and alcohol-related accidents, crime, violence, and disturbances tie up more resources than any other aspect of police operations.
  • Extended use of PCP is known to cause addiction, and studies indicate that repeated or prolonged use of PCP can cause withdrawal syndrome when drug use is stopped.

Residential Short-Term Treatment that is 30 days or less

Residential short-term treatment for substance abuse is a type oftreatment program where the addicted individual will stay at the facility on an inpatient basis, and which typically requires a stay of 30 days or less. While in residential short-term treatment the person undergoes an intensive but brief course of treatment that typically incorporates a supervised detox, counseling, and other forms of therapy which are aimed at helping the individual to recover and be able to function without drugs in daily life once rehabilitation is complete. Residential short-term treatment is not always effective for all instances of addiction, and most will need an aftercare program or further treatment in a more long-term residential setting.
