  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Around 3 to 4 percent of American adults, not just individuals with chronic pain are now using opioids.
  • Although there has been a dramatic decline in the use of some illegal drugs such as cocaine, recent government studies report that nearly one-third of people aged 12 and over whom used drugs for the first time in 2009 began by using a prescription drug non-medically.
  • Alcohol abuse can greatly suppress the immune system, and individuals addicted to alcohol are more susceptible to infections such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, bacterial infections, or HIV/AIDS.
  • Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the past month.
  • Drug withdrawal symptoms which persist have been observed in chronic drug users, even after acute withdrawal symptoms have passed which can occur for many months.

Hospital Inpatient Programs

Hospital inpatient substance abuse rehabilitation is carried out in a hospital setting and is supervised by doctors and other medical staff. Hospital inpatient treatment is often necessary in the beginning stages of abstinence when the client may encounter the onset of medically dangerous withdrawal symptoms, which is sometimes the case when quitting alcohol as well as a category of prescription drugs known as benzodiazepines which should be supervised very carefully by medical professionals in case of any complications. Hospital inpatient treatment is also administered to those who choose to undergo medication assisted withdrawal, as is the case with individuals who are addicted to opiates and wish to use this type of detox approach to manage the harsh withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin or other opiate withdrawal. This type of opiate detoxification is not treatment in itself however, and these people will need further counseling and therapy to entirely recover from addiction.
