  • Drug detoxification in drug rehab does not on its own handle any the psychological, social, and behavioral issues that accompany drug or alcohol addiction, and therefore does not produce the lasting changes necessary for full recovery and rehabilitation.
  • A heroin overdose as a result of snorting, smoking, or injecting the drug, can cause slow and shallow breathing, convulsions, coma, and even death.
  • Individuals who use amphetamines often take other drugs as well, which may complicate their treatment.

Co-Occurring Mental with Substance Abuse Issues

Persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders must address both issues in order to become fully rehabilitated. Some individuals take drugs to relieve symptoms of mental health disorders, and some people take drugs which then, in turn, creates symptoms which mimic mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. Drug treatment professionals know how to distinguish between the two, and can work with clients to appropriately treat real mental health problems in tandem with any other substance abuse treatment that is done with the person. This has proven to be effective in keeping individuals with mental health problems off of drugs and mentally stable and healthy.
