  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Although activated charcoal administration was once considered a mainstay of treatment for patients who have experienced an acute overdose, recent studies have indicated that there is very little in the way of benefits that are derived from it.
  • The skyrocketing rate of drug overdoses in the United States is not surprising, as opioid analgesics are increasingly being prescribed to individuals; according to a recent government survey, one in five adults and one in ten kids have received some form of opiate pain prescription within the past year.
  • Although amphetamines were once prescribed to control obesity and depression their use for these disorders was discontinued because patients became quickly and seriously dependent.
  • Around 10% of a dose of PCP is removed by the kidneys, which would make increased urinary clearance ineffective.
  • As the number of people in the United States seeking treatment for chronic pain increases, so will the rate of accidental opioid-related drug overdose cases.

Adolescents (18 and under)

It is a disturbing fact that many adolescents in the United States become introduced to drugs and alcohol at a very young age, and some even become addicted and dependent to drugs and/or alcohol. For adolescents who do become addicted and dependent to drugs and alcohol, parents must take every step possible to help their child before it is too late. Any indication that drugs or alcohol are in the picture should be addressed right away, otherwise, addiction will lead down a path of total destruction for the adolescent as well as for the family. There are drug rehab programs for adolescents offered in every state, many of which cater only to adolescents and have treatment professionals on hand that are trained specifically in handling this age group.
