  • Crack cocaine users often increase their dose in an attempt to intensify and prolong the effects of the drug, but this can also increase the risk of adverse psychological or physiological effects.
  • In 2009, marijuana was the primary drug in substance abuse treatment admissions for 21% of cases in West and Central Europe and 14% of cases in East and South-East Europe.
  • While a large percentage of people who have had a drug overdose have been reported to recover without experiencing any long term health effects, many of these cases have resulted in death.
  • Alcohol consumption is involved in as many as two-thirds of all sexual assaults and date rapes of teens and college students.
  • Prescription opiate abuse, particularly in relation to drugs such as OxyContin, is responsible for a large percentage of the increase in the rates of drug overdoses throughout the United States today.

Co-Occurring Mental with Substance Abuse Issues

Persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders must address both issues if there is any hope for them to become fully rehabilitated. Some individuals take drugs or alcohol to alleviate symptoms of mental health problems, and some people take drugs which then, in turn, creates symptoms which mimic mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Drug treatment professionals know how to differentiate between the two, and can work with clients to correctly treat real mental health problems in tandem with any other substance abuse treatment that is done with the individual. This has proven to be effective in keeping people with mental health disorders off of drugs and alcohol and mentally stable and healthy.
