  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • The most common substances that are reported in drug overdose deaths are heroin, cocaine, prescription drugs and alcohol.
  • In an emergency room setting individuals will be given oxygen as needed to and may be administered a common antidote for Vicodin overdose known as naloxone; additional action may need to be taken because of the acetaminophen contained in the drug.
  • Alcohol consumption impairs brain function which can result in poor judgment, reduced reaction time, loss of balance and motor skills, or slurred speech.
  • In several states deaths as a result of prescription drugs now exceed those from motor vehicle accidents, with opiate painkillers like Vicodin, Percocet and OxyContin being the main culprits.
  • For females as a group, circumstances may require a specialized drug rehab approach, and studies have shown that physical and sexual trauma is more common in drug-abusing women than in men seeking treatment.

Residential Short-Term Treatment that is 30 days or less

Residential short-term treatment for substance abuse is a type ofrehabilitation program where the person will stay at the facility on an inpatient basis, and which normally requires a stay of 30 days or less. While attending residential short-term treatment the recovering addict undergoes an intensive but short duration of treatment that commonly includes a supervised detoxification, counseling, and other forms of therapy which are aimed at helping the person become rehabilitated and able to function without drugs in everyday life once rehab is complete. Residential short-term treatment is not always effective for all scenarios of addiction, and most will require an aftercare program or further treatment in a more long-term residential facility.
