  • Drug overdose deaths in the United States have historically been linked to urban areas; according to recent government statistics, the rate of drug overdose deaths in rural areas throughout the U.S. has increased dramatically.
  • Methadone overdoses have skyrocket in the United States, because the drug is much cheaper and some insurance plans do not cover the more expensive prescription pain medications.
  • Amphetamines elevate cardiac output and blood pressure, making them dangerous for use by patients with a history of heart disease or hypertension.
  • Common physical effects of amphetamine may include loss of appetite, rapid breathing and heartbeat, high blood pressure, and dilated pupils.
  • Ages 18-24 are the peak years for onset and intensification of the most common mental health problems among youth, including alcohol abuse.

Hospital Inpatient Programs

Hospital inpatient drug or alcohol treatment is performed in a hospital or similar setting and is overseen by doctors and other medical staff. Hospital inpatient treatment is often necessary in the beginning stages of abstinence when the person may experience the onset of medically dangerous withdrawal symptoms, which is sometimes true when quitting alcohol as well as a category of prescription drugs known as benzodiazepines which must be supervised very carefully by medical professionals in case of any complications. Hospital inpatient treatment is also administered to those who choose to undergo medication assisted withdrawal, as is the case with opiate addicted individuals who wish to use this type of detox approach to manage the severe withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin or other opiate withdrawal. This type of opiate detoxification is not treatment in itself however, and these individuals will require further counseling and therapy to fully recover from addiction.
