  • Among high school seniors, past year use of Vicodin non-medically decreased, but only by less than 2%. However, past year nonmedical use of OxyContin remained the same among 8th, 10th and 12th graders and has increased in 10th graders over the past 5 years.
  • Drug withdrawal symptoms which persist have been observed in chronic drug users, even after acute withdrawal symptoms have passed which can occur for many months.
  • Cocaine is generally not taken by mouth for recreational purposes, and dangerous reactions, including death, have occurred in people who swallow the drug to avoid police detection or border authorities.
  • As cocaine passes through many hands from the importer to the user, it is usually diluted ("cut" or "stepped on") at each stage of distribution from about 95% pure to as little as 1% pure in some cases.
  • In the United States, the highest rates of drug overdose deaths are reported to occur in the rural Appalachian states, the Southwestern states, and New England.

Detoxification

Detoxification is generally the first step in getting off drugs. It allows a person to be in a supervised environment while they go through withdrawal symptoms for drugs and/or alcohol. There are diverse types of detoxification. Theyrange from drug-free to medically supervised. A typical mistake that quite a few addicts make is to think that detox is enough to kick their habit. This is almost never the case. All detox does is get an individual through the withdrawal when they stop using. It is often recommended that detox be followed up with some type of treatment plan to find out the root of why an individual was using drugs in the first place.
