  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Drugs such as methadone suppress the central nervous system which slows down body functioning and reduces physical and psychological pain.
  • The single most common cause of a heroin overdose is from the user combining heroin with alcohol or some other type of central nervous system depressant.
  • Ecstasy users sometimes combine the drug with other psychedelic drugs such as LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, or even marijuana to get a more psychedelic effect.
  • Fatal opioid-related drug overdose poisonings represent the fastest growing segment of overall deaths in the U.S. that are reported to be caused by poisonings.
  • Currently in the United States, there is very little funding for overdose prevention; unfortunately, the overdose epidemic continues to escalate as the federal grants for these types of preventative programs are not being approved for funding.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide variety of distinct treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be carried out on an outpatient basis, where the individual will typically receive treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the individual to reside in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is especially helpful in handling more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on unique circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then concentrate on the root psychological and emotional issues.
