  • In the United States, there has currently been an increase in the number of people that are overdosing on maintenance drugs such as methadone and buprenorphine.
  • Ecstasy causes a significant increase in serotonin in the brain, a major neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood, sleep, pain, emotion, and appetite, as well as other behaviors.
  • A single dose of Adderall can last anywhere from for four to six hours, although there is an extended-release version which can last for up to 12 hours.
  • Animal studies show that exposure to Ecstasy for just a few days can cause brain damage that is still evident many years later.
  • Overdose of OxyContin is serious and may require hospitalization. Occasionally, the individual needs to be temporarily hooked to a ventilator to help him breathe until the OxyContin wears off.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment takes place in a wide range of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be done on an outpatient basis, where the individual will typically receive treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the person to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly helpful in resolving more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on various circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the person physically rehabilitated, and then focus on underlying psychological and emotional issues.
