  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Recently in the state of California, drug overdose deaths have raised dramatically, according to many recent news reports. In one instance, a 19-year old Army recruit, who had just recently passed his military physical, took a handful and Xanax and went out drinking with several friends; this person did not ever get the opportunity to serve in the military, as he was subsequently found dead in his vehicle the next morning.
  • Heroin was responsible for over 28 percent of the emergency room visits in 2009 for patients who were seeking detox or substance abuse treatment as the reason for their visit.
  • In the U.S., over one-third of Ecstasy related emergency department visits in 2008 were made in the South, another 31.4% were made in the West, 18.5% were made in the Midwest, and 16.1% were made in the Northeast.
  • In the United States, there is currently a growing concern regarding the increase of Ritalin overdoses in small children; most of these cases were due to caregivers unintentionally giving patients excessive amounts of this medication.
  • Alcohol can get in the way of the process of the liver releasing glucose, which may result in low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) for up to 12 hours after you have a drink.

Men Only

Drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities created exclusively for men are emerging across the nation. While rehab facilities that treat both men and women continue to be the standard for drug and alcohol rehabilitation, many rehab centers are creating programs designed to help a specific target group. These centers are able to focus on what their client's personal needs are in a way that standard programs are not. While these specialized types of treatment programs are not needed for all recovering addicts, many men are deciding on men-only addiction treatment programs. This treatment option is ideal for those who feel more comfortable among others of the same sex when discussing private and often difficult issues from the past. Recovering from addiction is a difficult process for every addict and finding comfort among one's peer group is a great way of receiving the support needed to make the process that much more bearable and successful.
