  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Recently in the state of California, drug overdose deaths have raised dramatically, according to many recent news reports. In one instance, a 19-year old Army recruit, who had just recently passed his military physical, took a handful and Xanax and went out drinking with several friends; this person did not ever get the opportunity to serve in the military, as he was subsequently found dead in his vehicle the next morning.
  • Consuming 250 milliliters of alcohol causes the body to expel 800 to 1,000 milliliters of water, causing the individual to lose four times as much liquid as is gained. This diuretic effect is one of the main factors which contributes to a hangover.
  • A drug overdose could potentially be deadly, but the chances of survival can increase dramatically with immediate medical treatment.
  • Between 1992 and 1994, there was a 30% decrease in the use of inhalants among elementary school students.
  • In an attempt to reduce the occurrence of doctor shopping, pharmacy robberies, thefts, shoplifting incidents, health care fraud incidents and prescription fraud, the federal government has established prescription monitoring programs in 21 states to try and stop this.

Medicare Coverage

Drug addiction and alcoholism can effect many older Americans and seniors, and this problem is projected to only worsen in the coming years. Seniors who are covered through the Medicare program, an insurance program funded through the federal government for Americans in this age bracket, can use their benefits to receive vital treatment services for drug or alcohol addiction at a variety of substance abuse rehabilitation centers around the country. Medicare covers both inpatient and outpatient rehab facilities, and seniors who are in need of help can consult with their primary care physician to choose a rehab program covered by Medicare which would fit his or her particular needs.
