  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • Consuming 250 milliliters of alcohol causes the body to expel 800 to 1,000 milliliters of water, causing the individual to lose four times as much liquid as is gained. This diuretic effect is one of the main factors which contributes to a hangover.
  • When an individual is not highly educated about all aspects of methadone use, including knowing about the way that the drug builds up in the body, they will be at risk for experiencing a potentially fatal overdose.
  • About 15 percent of 10th and 12th graders in the U.S. have used amphetamines.
  • Overdose deaths by asphyxiation are common among people who mix alcohol with other drugs and accidentally inhale their vomit into their lungs.
  • Elderly drivers who drink heavily are at greater risk of a crash than elderly drivers without alcoholism after consuming an equivalent dose of alcohol.

Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment takes place in a wide range of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be performed on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically attend treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the individual to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is especially helpful in resolving more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on different circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will focus on getting the individual physically rehabilitated, and then focus on the root psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.
