  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • The skyrocketing rate of drug overdoses in the United States is not surprising, as opioid analgesics are increasingly being prescribed to individuals; according to a recent government survey, one in five adults and one in ten kids have received some form of opiate pain prescription within the past year.
  • When an individual is not highly educated about all aspects of methadone use, including knowing about the way that the drug builds up in the body, they will be at risk for experiencing a potentially fatal overdose.
  • A drug overdose describes the ingestion of a drug in quantities greater than have been recommended or are generally practiced; this condition can be extremely dangerous and can ultimately result in death.
  • During 2009, an estimated 760,000 people in the United States aged 12 or older used Ecstasy in the month prior to being surveyed.
  • An observer of a drug overdose should attempt to maintain a state of calm, and try to get a response from the person by lightly pinching the back of their arm or by calling their name; additionally, if breathing or a pulse rate is not detectable, emergency resuscitation should begin immediately.

Hospital Inpatient Programs

Hospital inpatient drug or alcohol rehabilitation is carried out in a hospital setting and is overseen by doctors and other medical staff. Hospital inpatient treatment is often necessary in the beginning stages of abstinence when the person may encounter the onset of medically dangerous withdrawal symptoms, which is sometimes true when quitting alcohol as well as a category of prescription drugs known as benzodiazepines which should be monitored very carefully by medical professionals in case of any complications. Hospital inpatient treatment is also delivered to individuals who choose to undergo medication assisted withdrawal, as is the case with opiate addicted individuals who wish to use this type of detox approach to avoid the harsh withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin or other opiate withdrawal. This type of opiate detoxification is not considered full rehabilitation and these individuals will require additional counseling and therapy to entirely recover from addiction.
