Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment is offered in a wide range of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment approaches. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be carried out on an outpatient basis, where the person will typically attend treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the individual to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly beneficial in resolving more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on different circumstances which can be different for each person. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the person physically rehabilitated, and then focus on the root psychological and emotional issues.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug treatment services which are provided on an outpatient basis are readily available to addicted people who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to participate in an inpatient treatment program. An outpatient substance abuse rehabilitation facility provides many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug treatment program where the individual is required to stay and reside at the rehab program until the treatment process is complete. Outpatient drug rehab is also available for those who have completed residential or inpatient treatment but also need a comprehensive aftercare and relapse prevention program which will provide further support and therapy to help them avoid relapse.

Residential Short-Term Treatment that is 30 days or less

Residential short-term treatment for substance abuse is a variety ofrehabilitation program where the individual will remain at the facility on an inpatient basis, and which normally demands a stay of 30 days or less. While in residential short-term treatment the recovering addict undergoes an intensive but short duration of treatment that typically includes a supervised detox, counseling, and other forms of therapy which are aimed at helping the individual become rehabilitated and able to function without drugs in daily life once rehab is complete. Residential short-term treatment is not always effective for all cases of addiction, and most will need an aftercare program or additional treatment in a more long-term residential setting.

Residential Long-Term Treatment that is 30 days or longer

Enrolling into a residential long-term treatment facility (more than 30 days) is an effective way ofresolving a serious drug or alcohol addiction problem. This type of drug and alcohol rehab program is more intensive than others that only last a few weeks or those where the person in recovery is free to come and go as they please. Choosing a residential long-term treatment program (more than 30 days) means that you as the client will stay at the treatment facility around the clock while you are in recovery. While offering a more relaxed home-like atmosphere the individual has access to treatment professionals at all times. Long term drug or alcohol rehabilitation facilities are a perfect choice for those who have a long history of substance abuse or who have had other unsuccessful attempts at recovery in the past.

Women Only

Recovery from drug addiction is a process that can be difficult and in manyways intimidating. This is why some women seeking help with addiction feel more comfortable in rehab centers created specifically for women. Women who are addicted to drugs or alcohol oftenhave personal issues that are considerably different than their male counter parts. In a drug or alcohol treatment center where all the clients are women, the recovering addict will feel more at ease and will be able to work through her personal conflicts that led to her substance abuse and addiction problems. Statistics show that up to seventy percent of drug abusing women report having some type of sexual or physical abuse in their past. These sensitive issues are easier to work through in the company of other women without fear of judgment or ridicule.

Men Only

Drug rehab programs designed exclusively for men are rising up across the country. Although programs that work with both men and women are still the standard for drug rehabilitation, many facilities are developing programs intended to help a specific target group. These centers are able to focus on what their client's individual needs are in a way that standard facilities cannot provide. While these specialized types of rehab programs are not needed for all recovering addicts, many men are selecting men-only addiction rehab programs. This rehabilitation option is best suited for those who feel more comfortable with those of the same sex when discussing private and often difficult memories from the past. Recovering from addiction is a challenging process for every addict and finding comfort among one's peer group is a very good way of receiving the support needed to make the process that much more bearable and successful.

Self Pay (Out of Pocket)

Self payment substance abuse treatment programs are a great alternative to other types of rehab facilities i.e. private medical insurance and state funded programs. People who are capable of attending self payment programs pay for their entire rehabilitation process out of pocket. Keep in mind though, this does not mean that they will not have access to financial assistance if needed. It just means that self payment is their primary method of covering the cost of their substance abuse treatment program. In order to learn more about self payment programs, make contact with a substance abuse rehabilitation facility and inquire as to their payment options. It is beneficial to contact a number of facilities so that you have an understanding of your choices with regards to treatment options and payment methods.

Private or Personal Health Insurance

If someone is abusing drugs or alcohol and is looking for help, many effective substance abuse rehabilitation facilities accept private health insurance. Whereas some outpatient and short term programs accept private health insurance, far more effective drug or alcohol treatment programs which offer an inpatient or residential stay for at least 90 days are also an available option. These programs which accept private health insurance can differ in terms of treatment curriculum, but those clients who are covered by private health insurance are fortunate enough to have financial assistance when it comes to paying for a drug or alcohol treatment program. For additional information, consult with an addiction specialist at a drug or alcohol rehabilitation facility in your area to see which services your private health insurance will cover.
