  • Drug Overdose Facts
  • An overdose from amphetamines is generally characterized by symptoms such as a rapid heartbeat, muscle cramps, seizures, psychosis, paranoia, and confusion, loss of motor control movement, lack of consciousness, cardiac arrest, and death.
  • As the morphine withdrawal progresses users may experience elevated blood pressure, chills with goose bumps alternating with hot flashes, kicking movements of the legs and excessive sweating, severe pains in the bones and muscles and muscle spasms.
  • Alcohol use among college students is associated with at least 1,400 student deaths and 500,000 unintentional injuries each year.
  • The number of overdose death certificates that list poisoning by opioid pain killers has skyrocketed in the U. S. over the last decade; some researchers have estimated that these rates have risen over 90% within the last three years.
  • When an individual is not highly educated about all aspects of methadone use, including knowing about the way that the drug builds up in the body, they will be at risk for experiencing a potentially fatal overdose.

Outpatient Treatment

Drug rehabilitation services which are provided on an outpatient basis are readily available to addicted people who have circumstances which prevent them from being able to take part in an inpatient rehab center. An outpatient substance abuse treatment program provides many of the same services as an inpatient program, but allows for flexibility as opposed to an inpatient drug or alcohol rehab facility where the person is expected to stay and reside at the treatment program until the treatment process is complete. Outpatient drug or alcohol treatment is also offered for those who have completed residential or inpatient treatment but also need a thorough aftercare program which will provide further support and therapy to help them avoid relapse.

Gays and Lesbians can sometimes have unique treatment needs when receiving substance abuse treatment. A specialized curriculum and treatment atmosphere which is conducive to the needs of gays and lesbians is available at certain drug rehabilitation facilities across the nation which recognize the unique needs and challenges which gays and lesbians will experience during treatment. Gay and lesbians can achieve full rehabilitation and recovery just like any other person in treatment, however it can be beneficial for gays and lesbians to be in a supportive atmosphere which doesn't judge them or alienate them due to their sexual preference.

Spanish Services

There are more and more Spanish speaking clients walking into drug treatment facilities every day needing help. Because Spanish is such a widespread language in this country, many drug rehabilitation programs are capable of providing treatment to Spanish speaking individuals. Additionally, many counselors and therapists make it a point to learn the language so as to be able to provide the support and therapy needed for Spanish speaking people.

Other Language Programs

Those who speak other languages, other than English that is, should receive substance abuse rehabilitation which is on par with English speakers. Those who speak other languages should not feel that their treatment opportunities are limited or inferior because they don't speak English. There are quite a few drug and alcohol treatment programs available which provide services to those who speak foreign languages, all of which provide a variety of programs to choose from. For example, some drug and alcohol treatment facilities which cater to individuals who speak other languages are only short term rehab facilities, but there are more long term options available. Foreign language speakers can consult with an addiction professional in their area to choose a drug or alcohol rehab facility which would be suitable to their needs.

Self Pay (Out of Pocket)

Self payment drug treatment facilities are a great alternative to other types of rehab centers i.e. private medical insurance and state funded programs. People who are capable of attending self payment programs pay for their entire rehab process out of pocket. Keep in mind though, this does not mean that they will not have access to financial assistance if needed. It just means that self payment is their primary method of covering the cost of their drug rehab program. To learn more about self payment at a specific program, make contact with a drug or alcohol rehabilitation program and inquire as to their payment options. It is a good idea to contact several facilities so that you have a comparison of your choices with regards to rehab options and payment methods.

Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid is a type of health insurance which is offered to people in certain low-income tax brackets. Eligibility for Medicaid depends greatly on income and other circumstances including whether or not the individual has dependents and if they receive any other assistance. Medicaid may even cover the costs associated with drug rehabilitation, and there are many drug treatment programs throughout the country which are covered through Medicaid. Many drug and alcohol treatment facilities which are covered through Medicaid may only provide a limited treatment curriculum and may only provide such treatment on a short term basis, usually 30 days or less. People who have Medicaid should explore which programs cover the greatest amount of treatment for the most amount of time to reap the full benefits of a Medicaid rehab program.

State Financed Insurance besides Medicaid

Some people are covered through state financed insurance because they do not qualify for Medicaid. Some states however offer state financed health insurance to those individuals who cannot afford private health insurance. State financed health insurance programs will in some cases cover the costs associated with substance abuse treatment at a variety of drug rehabilitation facilities around the country. State financed insurance other than Medicaid may cover both outpatient or inpatient substance abuse treatment services. To find out which rehabilitation programs will accept state financed insurance, consult a drug treatment advisor.

Private or Personal Health Insurance

If someone is addicted to drugs or alcohol and is looking for help, many effective drug or alcohol rehabilitation facilities accept private health insurance. Whereas some outpatient and short term programs accept private health insurance, far more effective drug rehab programs which provide an inpatient or residential stay for at least 90 days are also an available option. These programs which accept private health insurance can differ in terms of treatment curriculum, but those people who are covered by private health insurance are fortunate enough to have financial assistance when it comes to paying for a drug or alcohol treatment program. For more information, speak with with an addiction specialist at a substance abuse rehabilitation facility in your area to find out which programs your private health insurance will cover.

Income Based Payment (Sliding Scale)

Paying for drug or alcohol treatment can be a problem, because typically all resources have been exhausted due to the persons addiction. Many drug rehab programs recognize this fact which is why many drug and alcohol rehab programs across the nation offer payment arrangements known as a sliding scale fee. There are several factors put into the equation of determining what the fee will be from person to person, and these factors are based on individual circumstances such as income, cash on hand, living circumstances, the size of one's family etc. Sliding scale fees have been in use for some time as most drug rehab programs would prefer to find a way to make it work financially so that those that need addiction help can get the help they need.
