Substance Abuse Programs

Substance abuse treatment takes place in a wide variety of different treatment settings with a variety of different treatment methods. For example, some substance abuse treatment can be performed on an outpatient basis, where the individual will typically participate in treatment during the day but is allowed to return home daily. Other substance abuse treatment requires the individual to stay in a hospital or residential facility during the entire course of treatment, which is particularly helpful in resolving more severe cases of addiction. Inpatient and residential substance abuse treatment can be done on a short term or long term basis, depending on different circumstances which can be different for each individual. Most substance abuse treatment will concentrate on getting the person physically rehabilitated, and then concentrate on the root psychological and emotional issues which will help them avoid relapse in the future.

Detoxification

Detoxification is commonly the 1st step in getting off drugs. It makes it possible for an individual to be in a supervised setting while they go through withdrawal symptoms for drugs and/or alcohol. There are diverse types of detoxification. Theyvary from drug-free to medically supervised. A typical mistake that many addicts make is to feel that detox is sufficient to kick their habit. This is rarely the case. All detox does is get a person through the withdrawal when they stop using. It is often recommended that detox be followed up with some type of treatment plan to find out the root of why someone was using drugs in the first place.

Residential Short-Term Treatment that is 30 days or less

Residential short-term treatment for substance abuse is a variety oftreatment program where the individual will remain at the facility on an inpatient basis, and which normally demands a stay of 30 days or less. While in residential short-term treatment the recovering addict undergoes an intensive but brief course of treatment that commonly includes a supervised detox, counseling, and other forms of therapy which are aimed at helping the individual to recover and be able to function without drugs in daily life once treatment is complete. Residential short-term treatment is not always effective for all cases of addiction, and most will need an aftercare program or additional treatment in a more long-term residential facility.

Residential Long-Term Treatment that is 30 days or longer

Enrolling into a residential long-term treatment program (more than 30 days) is an effective way ofresolving a severe substance abuse problem. This type of substance abuse treatment program is more intensive than others that only last a few weeks or those where the person in recovery is free to come and go as they please. Attending a residential long-term rehab program (more than 30 days) means that you as the client will live at the treatment center around the clock while you are in recovery. While offering a more relaxed home-like environment the client has access to counselors and staff at all times. Long term drug rehabilitation facilities are a perfect choice for those who have a long history of addiction or who have had other unsuccessful attempts at recovery in the past.

Co-Occurring Mental with Substance Abuse Issues

Persons with co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders must handle both issues in order to become fully rehabilitated. Some people take drugs or alcohol to alleviate symptoms of mental health complications, and some people take drugs which then, in turn, creates symptoms which mimic mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. Addiction treatment professionals know how to distinguish between the two, and can work with clients to correctly treat real mental health problems in tandem with any other substance abuse treatment that is done with the individual. This has proven to be effective in keeping individuals with mental health problems off of drugs and alcohol and mentally stable and happy.

Seniors/Older Adult Services

Whether it is apparent or not, seniors and older adults encompass a considerable percentage of individuals in the United States who struggle with drug and/or alcohol abuse and addiction. As the baby boomer generation ages, this will become an even bigger problem with an even bigger need for drug and alcohol rehab facilities which are prepared to treat seniors and older adults who are in need of treatment for addiction issues. Seniors and older adults are faced with many physical challenges as a result of their age, which can affect treatment outcome if not addressed concurrently. It is beneficial for seniors and older adults to seek rehabilitation before any long term consequences arise.

Women Only

Rehabilitation from drug addiction is a process that can be challenging and in a lot ofways intimidating. This is why some women seeking recovery feel more comfortable in rehab centers designed specifically for women. Women who are addicted to drugs or alcohol typicallyhave personal issues that are much different than that of males. In a drug rehabilitation facility where all the clients are women, the recovering addict will feel more at ease and will be able to work through her personal conflicts that led to her substance abuse and addiction problems. Statistics show that up to seventy percent of drug abusing women report having some type of sexual or physical abuse in their past. These delicate issues are easier to address in the company of other women without fear of judgment or ridicule.

Men Only

Drug and alcohol treatment programs made specifically for men are rising up across the country. Although rehab facilities that work with both men and women are still the standard for drug rehabilitation, many rehab facilities are developing programs designed to help a particular target group. These facilities are able to focus on what their client's individual needs are in a way that standard facilities cannot provide. Although these specialized types of rehabilitation programs may not be needed for all recovering addicts, many men are choosing men-only drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. This treatment option is ideal for those who feel more comfortable among others of the same sex when sharing private and often difficult issues from the past. Recovering from addiction is a challenging process for every addict and finding comfort among one's peer group is a very good way of getting the support needed to make the process that much more bearable and successful.

Self Pay (Out of Pocket)

Self payment drug rehabilitation centers are an excellent alternative to other types of rehabilitation facilities i.e. private medical insurance and state funded facilities. Individuals who are able to attend self payment programs pay for their entire rehab process out of pocket. Keep in mind though, this does not mean that they will not have access to financial assistance if needed. It just means that self payment is their primary method of covering the cost of their drug rehab program. To learn more about self payment at a specific program, make contact with a drug or alcohol rehabilitation facility and ask about their payment options. It is a good idea to contact several programs so that you have an understanding of your choices with regards to rehab options and payment methods.

Private or Personal Health Insurance

When a person is abusing drugs or alcohol and is seeking help, many effective substance abuse rehabilitation programs accept private health insurance. Whereas some outpatient and short term programs accept private health insurance, far more effective drug treatment centers which require an inpatient or residential stay for at least 90 days are also an available option. These programs which accept private health insurance can vary in terms of treatment curriculum, but those people who are covered by private health insurance are fortunate enough to have financial assistance when it comes to paying for a drug or alcohol rehab program. For more information, speak with with an addiction specialist at a substance abuse treatment center in your area to find out which programs your private health insurance will cover.
